WASPS & HORNETS 101

Learn about seasonal changes in wasp, hornet & yellowjacket diets to effectively use Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap.

Wasps, hornets and yellowjackets can put a damper on your outdoor plans. The sight of these flying, stinging pests and their nests serves as both a fear and a nuisance while trying to spend time in your outside spaces. Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap is a fast-acting solution that attracts and traps wasps, hornets, yellowjackets and flies. For the trap to be most effective, it's important to understand the seasonal changes of wasps: growth, peak, decline and hibernation. Commonly spotted species like paper wasps, bald-faced hornets and yellowjackets all experience a similar peak each year, making your trap most effective during this season.

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A WASP

As spring begins, species of wasps are in their growth phase, where hatched larvae grow into adult workers and increase their search for protein to feed younger larvae. Wasp colony size and activity peaks in summer, when workers increase their search for sugar. Activity declines in the fall and food sources become depleted as the temperature drops, and wasps become quite aggressive due to desperation for now very limited food. Winter and its cold temperatures lead to death of the wasp colony, including the old queen, workers, and males (drones). The only wasps to survive are the newly fertilized females, which enter hibernation. These hibernating females are the future queens, ready to emerge in spring and establish new nests.

WHEN WILL MY TRAP BE MOST EFFECTIVE?

Understanding these patterns can help you achieve the best results from your Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap.

INITIAL SIGHTINGS: While you may spot a wasp or two as spring unfolds, the trap is not as useful during this season. At this time, wasps are focused on laying eggs and building their nests. They'll be centered on a protein-focused diet for their offspring, like caterpillars, cicadas and grubs.

PEAK: As summer rolls around, the trap enters its most effective window from June – October. While the paper wasp population is usually highest in early summer, the bald-faced hornet and yellowjacket populations experience their peak in mid-to-late summer and early fall. At this time, all three species are indulging in a sugar-focused diet, attracting them to nectar sources.

END: Fall creeps in, and the wasp population declines. While all three species still have a sugar-focused diet, nectar sources become unavailable. Due to low food availability, bald-faced hornets and yellowjackets may see an elevated capture rate.

PAPER WASPS

Paper wasps have legs that dangle when they fly and tend to be around one inch long. They can appear in multiple color combinations. Some are yellow and black, while others are brown and orange/reddish. While this diversity in coloration can make them hard to distinguish, their exaggerated thin tapered waist and unique nest help to identify them.

Their upside-down, umbrella-shaped nests have a paper texture, with a single layer of cells exposed. Paper wasps usually craft these relatively small nests on the eaves of houses.

WHY IS THE TRAP EFFECTIVE?

We often associate summer with bright, vibrant flowers, fresh fruit, and cold sodas outside with friends. Wasps and hornets feel the same way! This encompasses why the Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap works through both its visual cues and unique formula.
Bright colors like the trap's white and yellow hues are attractive to wasps. This mirrors their association between flowers' vibrant colors and flowers as a nectar source. Like flowers or cans of soda, the trap's formula captures sweetness with a yeast and liquid lure. The carbohydrates and sugar attract wasps, hornets and yellowjackets, just like the nectar sources they consume in nature during these seasons. The fermentation emits CO2 and is reminiscent of overripened fruit, serving as another attractant. The quick-drown formula prevents escape, trapping these pests and keeping them away from your outdoor spaces.

HOW TO IDENTIFY WASPS & HORNETS

Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap works on all three of these commonly seen species. With some information on their appearance and nests, you may be able to identify which pests are making their presence known in your outdoor spaces.

BALD-FACED HORNETS

Bald-faced hornets are anywhere between ½ inch to ¾ inch long and appear black and white in color. Their distinct white faces help to identify them.

Bald-faced hornet nests are gray in color, football shaped and have a paper texture. They can be spotted in higher sections of trees, bushes and manmade structures, at least three feet off the ground. While they’re most commonly placed between 10 and 12 feet high, they can be found as high as 60 feet up!

YELLOWJACKETS

Yellowjackets are medium-sized black and yellow wasps. While their coloration can lead people to mistake them for paper wasps, their size sets them apart. Yellowjackets have more compact, stockier bodies and a smaller overall size, with workers typically measuring around ½ inch long. They also have much larger colonies.

Yellowjacket nests are gray in color and have a paper texture. They tend to nest underground in abandoned rodent holes, but can nest above ground in trees, wall voids and sheds. Regardless, these nests are often secluded and hard to spot unless accidentally exposed.

PRO TIPS FOR TRAP PLACEMENT

When choosing an appropriate place for your Spectracide™ Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Trap, be sure to hang it away from areas where children and pets actively play and spend time. Avoid nests or flowering plants and hang the trap 15 feet away from pest activity. Place it approximately 4-5 feet high in a sunny area, sheltered from direct sunlight and high winds. If you're using multiple traps, remember to hang them 15-30 feet apart.

Make sure the traps are open when they're in use but keep them closed when they’re removed.

You Hold the Power™

With a reduced presence of these pests in your outdoor spaces, you and your family can forget about these flying insects and focus on making memories – cans of soda included!
